Eco-Speedway: Powering Bahrain with Sustainable Energy
Harnessing kinetic energy from vehicular movement to support Bahrain’s 2030 Vision for sustainability.
Revolutionizing Energy with Eco-Speedway
Eco-Speedway is an innovative project designed to capture kinetic energy from vehicular movement on high-speed roadways. Strategically placed helical Savonius rotor turbines convert high-speed airflow (up to 120 km/h) into electrical energy. This powers streetlights and feeds surplus energy into Bahrain’s grid, reducing carbon emissions.

3
Efficient Design
Helical Savonius rotor turbines capture wind from any direction, ensuring continuous energy generation.
Aligned with Bahrain's 2030 Vision
Eco-Speedway aligns with Bahrain’s 2030 Vision by focusing on renewable energy and eco-friendly innovation. The helical Savonius rotor was chosen for its ability to capture wind from any direction, making it ideal for roadside placement. This design ensures efficient energy generation from both vehicular airflow and natural wind.

How Eco-Speedway Powers the Future
The system uses helical Savonius rotor turbines driven by wind from passing vehicles. In the prototype, simulated high-speed airflow rotates the turbine to generate kinetic energy. This energy is converted into electricity, stepped up by a transformer, and stored in rechargeable batteries to power LED streetlights, demonstrating feasibility for full-scale use.
Kinetic Energy
Turbines convert wind into mechanical energy.
Electricity Generation
Parallel circuit transforms kinetic to electrical energy.
Energy Storage
Rechargeable batteries store energy for later use.
Safety and Sustainable Materials
Locally sourced aluminum from ALBA (Aluminum Bahrain) is used for cost-effective turbine construction. Safety features include a sensor system that locks and slows the turbine if rotation exceeds safe limits. Minor road excavations are required for installation, but the long-term benefits outweigh the temporary inconvenience.

Benefits for Bahrain's Sustainable Development
Eco-Speedway addresses Bahrain’s reliance on fossil fuels and high carbon emissions. Generating renewable energy from vehicular wind powers streetlights and feeds surplus energy into the grid. This reduces strain on traditional power sources, promotes eco-friendly urban development, and supports Bahrain’s 2030 Vision.
Reduced Reliance
Decreasing dependence on fossil fuels.
Lower Emissions
Reducing Bahrain's carbon footprint.
Eco-Friendly Urbanization
Supporting sustainable urban development.
Future Plans and Expansion
Future plans include deploying turbines along major highways like the King Fahd Causeway, integrating the system with Bahrain’s power grid, and using smart technology for efficient energy distribution. Collaborations with the Sustainable Energy Authority and private sectors will drive pilot projects, green energy policies, and public awareness campaigns.
